Area rugs in high traffic areas can begin to look dull, but area rug cleaning by ServiceMaster Residential Care can bring the vibrant colors back to life in our Memphis area rug cleaning facility. Oriental rugs come in many fibers, piles, colors and countries of origin, we can apply various cleaning techniques to reveal their beauty.
The terms “area” and “oriental” are sometimes used interchangeably today but there is a difference between area and oriental rugs. Just because a rug is made of wool does not make it a true oriental rug.
Oriental rugs, by definition, are rugs manufactured in the East. The East includes a wide area from China to Central Europe. Some of the major rug manufacturing countries are India, China, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Turkey. Rugs from different countries have different characteristics based on the dye selection and weaving methods used in that country. Oriental rugs can be classified into two
major categories – pile rugs and flat woven rugs.
Pile rugs have knots that are tied to a foundation and then sheared to create the pile. Wool and silk are the most commonly used pile fibers, while cotton, wool and silk are used for the foundation material.
Flat Woven Rugs
Flat woven rugs are also called killims, kelims, dhurries (cotton face), druggets (wool face), Navajo, palas, etc. They are similar to a tapestry fabric, are reversible and provide excellent wear and durability.
Below are a few types of Area rugs
The name comes from the needle or hook that is used to pull the face yarns through a backing material. These rugs generally have a dark central design, followed by a light area and then a dark border.
These rugs have an oval (sometimes round) shape. They can be hand made or machine made by sewing together long braids of yarn. They are reversible and come in a wide range of price and quality. Braids used in braided rugs can be made from strips of fabric either with or without a stuffing material inside, or yarns can be braided together around a stuffing material.
These rugs are made in Greece with 100% wool fibers. The pile fibers in these rugs are about 5 inches long (similar to shag carpets). The Rya type Flokati rugs have rings of color – light color in the center of the ring and darker colors towards the edges.
Machine Made Rugs
These are imitations of oriental rugs made with wool fibers on jacquard looms. Some popular manufacturers are Karastan and Adoros.
In addition to these machine made wool rugs, inexpensive rugs made of polypropylene (Olefin) fibers are also commonly available today.
What’s the Best Way to Care for Area Rugs? Many of our customers inquire about how to best care for and clean their area rugs. Regular vacuuming is a must, in addition to turning your area rug twice a year. You can also move your area rug to a place with less foot traffic, when possible.
However, home vacuums are not enough to keep area rugs or carpet looking like new (and one popular brand can actually void your warranty). You may be concerned if your rugs are starting to show signs of dirty traffic areas and stains, or if their colors aren’t as vibrant as they once were. If that sounds like your flooring, it’s probably time to have your area rugs and carpet professionally cleaned to extend the life of your investment.
Professional Area Rug Cleaning When everyday dirt or sand work their way into the fibers of your rugs, permanent damage can occur. Your rugs are equally susceptible to dragged-in gravel and mud from the foot traffic in your home. Food and beverage spills, pet stains and odors also take their toll on your flooring, rugs and carpets!
Over the counter dirt and stain remover products only clean the surface. These consumer cleaning products do not go below the surface for that deep cleaning result you hope to achieve -- and may even result in areas of discoloration on your rug, carpet or upholstery.
Our professional, high pressure & temperature cleaning goes deep down to thoroughly clean and deodorize your area rugs from the bottom up. You will get that clean look and smell when the musty odor is gone, and the dirt and stains have been removed from your rug.
We will help keep your rugs & carpets looking great, so that they will hold up longer. The cleaning products we use on rugs and carpets are safe for your children and pets. We can professionally remove stains and clean any size rug.
The Process of Cleaning an Area Rug An IICRC trained and certified carpet cleaner will know how to clean your particular type of area rug (even if the original tag no longer exists) , which is important because of the variety of materials used: wool, silk, viscose, and many synthetic blends. The material determines the best way to clean your area rug.
A thorough rug or carpet cleaning will eliminate dry particulate which traps odors, allergens and dust mites -- those hidden menaces that you cannot even see. Our trained technicians know how to clean all types of area rugs safely, even your most valued Persian and Oriental rugs. With regular cleaning, we will protect the integrity of the fabric with no fraying or damage.
Area rugs which are heavily soiled, have pet issues and certain material area rugs will be taken to our rug spa for careful, thorough cleaning and drying. This will help to protect the floor surface below. Our aim is to provide you with the highest level of prompt and efficient carpet cleaning service.
